　大腿骨の近位骨端から上外側方に突出している部分で、皮下からでも確認ができ、中殿筋、小殿筋、および梨状筋の付着部となっている。また、大転子の後面、大腿骨頚の付け根あたりにある深い陥凹部を転子窩（閉鎖筋、双子筋の停止部）という。

It is directed lateral and slightly posterior. In the adult it is about 1 cm lower than the head. Because the pelvic outlet in the female is larger than in the male, there is a greater distance between the greater trochanters in the female.
